The Quest for a Shamisen!

“The shamisen or samisen (Japanese:, literally "three flavor strings"), also called sangen (literally "three strings") is a three-stringed musical instrument played with a plectrum called a bachi. The pronunciation in Japanese is usually "shamisen" (in western Japan, and often in Edo-period sources "samisen") but sometimes "jamisen" when used as a suffix (e.g.Tsugaru-jamisen)”

I’ve been aching to be able to play a instrument for some time now, and what suits better that to take on a nice old Japanese instrument?

So these past few days i have been in search for my upcoming musical instrument, i never thought it would be this hard to find one in KYOTO of all places! Kyoto being the main city of Japanese culture! Oh well, tomorrow i am attending a tryout class with a Shamisen teacher at the same place we went to dance with the class! It will be my first encounter in real life with this instrument, hopefully it will be as kick-ass as in my imagination (probably not, but i have decided i am going to learn this instrument no matter what!) The teacher of all people should be able to guide me to a good local store were i can buy one. If, by all odds, she doesn’t know, i have found a set on the internet for a really good price! So either way I'm getting one tomorrow!

This will hurt my wallet a little bit, but that’s a sacrifice I’m going to take, i need some kind of hobby to relax with and i think this will suit me just fine. It's also a great way to practice my Japanese at the same time by joining the local Shamisen club at the university and also try to read books on the instrument. But enough of this for now! I’ll update more on this when i know more myself.

Other then that i haven’t done much these few weeks. Just been hanging with friends, dying from sweating (Just keeps getting warmer) and cooked rice. Yeah, Cooking rice! I’ve been cooking rice all the time these past 2 weeks because I’m trying out my friend Patriks diet he helped me set up!

I am eating 3 small main meals everyday with even smaller meals in between, so 6 “meals” each day. Seems to work because I’m always hungry but not so that it bothers me, and i get small refills every 3-4h. I am eating fish and rice every day for breakfast for example, but i don’t feel very Japanese when doing it...Being all grumpy in my underwear, watching TV and cursing over the breakfast, i still hate breakfasts! And of course no sweets and soda. So let’s see how far i can keep this up and if i loose any weight! Were were i before i started rambling on about my eating habits? Oh yeah. Me doing nothing!

I feel kinda bad for not doing anything special when I’m finally here in Japan, with all this time during summer break and so much places to see and much stuff to do! But the warmth is such a... a.. how can i say it... “Mood killer”? It gets so warm and humid during the days you really loose all energy to do stuff, and if you despite of that actually do something, I get a headache, sunburn and get really tired. So you end up not enjoying the things your doing anyway. Like visiting temples or festivals. But i promise you all and my self that as soon as the temperature drops and the humidity goes away, this pale Swedish guy are going to do a heck of lot more exploring and sightseeing.

That’ll be it for today! thanks for dropping by and please leave a comment! Makes me feel like someone is actually reading this shit.
